Literacy Impacts Everyone!

Washtenaw Literacy is celebrating 50 years of service & support. Together we can build a more literate community!

A great childhood memory is my father reading me The Hobbit. That book inspired reading journeys, exploration into creative writing and world building, turned me into a lifelong Tolkien fan and provided me the opportunity to look for larger lessons and themes through this great and creative work.

My love for this book has endured and I was so happy to be able to read The Hobbit and Lord of the Rings books to my kids. Over the years I’ve also engaged them with trivia from the books, and we’ve had long conversations around the story and the characters, discussing topics including friendship, courage, and morality, and the fact that choices are not always simple and clear cut.

I think about this multi-generational experience in my family and some of the amazing and impactful stories that I’ve heard from Washtenaw Literacy learners, when, as parents, they were finally able to read stories to their children and experience those quiet moments and deep connection.

Please help me celebrate Washtenaw Literacy’s first 50 years and invest in them and the impact that they are making in the local community for the next 50 years.

My goal is to raise $5000.
