For me literacy is about empowerment. Finding ways to give every person in our society a voice. Letting every person have the escape of reading. In a country with so much opportunity, we should leave no one behind.
And, ultimately, literacy is a right. It's not just for the poor or the rich. Everyone has a right to information, freedom and the pursuit of happiness. These things come through literacy! We have to make good on the promises of democracy and stand up for the right to literacy.
