Week after week, on Wednesday nights, one room in Malletts Creek Library fills with conversation.

The people participating in the conversations are a mix of tutors and English language learners: some brand-new and looking nervous, some who have been coming for months and are as comfortable in this space as they are in their own living rooms. The topics of conversation cover a wide and ever-expanding range: traditional holidays in China, the geography of Iran, irregular past tense verbs, or what was eaten for breakfast that morning. Some conversations are animated, while others are halting as speakers carefully piece together the words to communicate their ideas.

But no matter the topic of conversation or the fluency of the speakers, the message at every table is the same: This is a safe space--to ask questions, to practice English, to form relationships.

Washtenaw Literacy promotes literacy in Washtenaw County for native and non-native speakers alike. Through individual tutorials and group sessions like the one where I volunteered on Wednesday nights, ESL learners in our community have a place to hone the linguistic skills they need to reach their goals and enjoy a full life in the U.S.

Literacy, in both a first and second language, is critical for a sustainable and just society.

Please consider donating. Just a small donation will go a long way in helping Washtenaw Literacy empower our community.
