Join me in supporting literacy.
Literacy, to me, is self-advocacy. It enables people to fight for their own rights and needs. Critically, it allows people to communicate with one another in ways that let them be understood. Not only is this important for the individuals, but it is important for everyone.
With us always is the dichotomy between the self and the other. While it is important to know one's self, it is sad that this knowledge is often framed by who or what we are not.
When those who do not look or live like us, those who are from a different place, be it from a different zip code or a different nation, are able to say for themselves who they are and what they need, it closes the distance between us. Our differences are beautiful, our differences are our strength. Having a plurality of perspectives is essential for continued positive growth and shared empathy.
This may seem lofty, but I believe that the stakes are high. Washtenaw County may be small when compared to the scope of the world, but I believe that it is important to work to enact the changes we wish to see where we are.
